I came across a house building company in a quiet country location in the midst of preparing a house frame the Japanese way. They were using a combination of electric power tools and traditional hand tools to make intricate joints in the timber. These joints slide into one another and are held together with wooden pegs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lots more future timber house frames in the distance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using a a hammer and chisel to remove the excess timber and give the finishing touches.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this instance the tradesman is just using hand pressure to do the finishing touches to this joint with a chisel.</div>

After reading so many woodworking books with photos of immaculate workshops with everything in it's place and not a bit of sawdut anywhere it was reassuring to see that not everyone's workshops look like that.</div>

If Jules Verne and Steven Spielberg both put their heads together they couldn't have conceived a scene like the following picture. What would you make with machinery like this - submarines for the Australian Navy? Perhaps this is the office of Hanna Barbara where the Jetsons was produced just after finishing off the Flintstone series!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ5EcCqg8QBJAj6WrTfKrMwM9WYt72gW7jGHel09URt6vsvdIYp8l0tNWDu8OVTbhtbOzpTqtfVO7CXKF6IQbxaxBefxC20Mk7FDnyiXAlFNAtA2co_IMDIhNN0OUZKF4lMkFn_vF-bFg/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ5EcCqg8QBJAj6WrTfKrMwM9WYt72gW7jGHel09URt6vsvdIYp8l0tNWDu8OVTbhtbOzpTqtfVO7CXKF6IQbxaxBefxC20Mk7FDnyiXAlFNAtA2co_IMDIhNN0OUZKF4lMkFn_vF-bFg/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
While you're trying to work it out let's take a look at another part of the same factory. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, this has to be the office because there's an office chair and it's surrounded by paper. And although I am a part of the 21st century's paperless office elite my office does look like this only there's no paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWU8jigOcUPXSu4bPFXy6bqSgieeOaZrCWuVmjSCryV8U4OpJBMPzO8-8eOyMzqdrw59AcKyHbGR22tMTz7-P4gTOV6vTzZjw_CM4AMD0j8qz7hHFRfuBIFknjG75WwXljwfK_vMfCEUI/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWU8jigOcUPXSu4bPFXy6bqSgieeOaZrCWuVmjSCryV8U4OpJBMPzO8-8eOyMzqdrw59AcKyHbGR22tMTz7-P4gTOV6vTzZjw_CM4AMD0j8qz7hHFRfuBIFknjG75WwXljwfK_vMfCEUI/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+2.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm looking around and I'm starting to think this place is older that I first thought because the walls are made with stcks and finished off with clay and I know they don't make factories like that these days - do they? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GbKnIBBplec_PGegBrIJYRBkRtQaV1hXS49Naa0wRySlQtIiY2kxpznQLyrSHvJDWfsp6fjkRQmsjskBH_14LHhyGLAVcKgcUSDB_o9Py6Mm1XZAJJ4wWnjpoRdkvQJ-HaFILt3W-qc/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GbKnIBBplec_PGegBrIJYRBkRtQaV1hXS49Naa0wRySlQtIiY2kxpznQLyrSHvJDWfsp6fjkRQmsjskBH_14LHhyGLAVcKgcUSDB_o9Py6Mm1XZAJJ4wWnjpoRdkvQJ-HaFILt3W-qc/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+3.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Could this be modern Japan, the country that emerged from the second world war in tatters and in 15 years would be described as the "Economic Miracle"? That's right - congratulations. The same place where in the capital city, street vending machines can do a face scan to determine your age and sex and make a suggestion as to what you would like to drink at that time of the day!! Yep, you're right again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not far from the office in a back room, Charles Dickens has just ducked around to the Blue Boar Inn to get a coffee leaving the office boy to repair the stapler (got to keep all that paperwork together until they too join the paperless office craze that's sweepiing through the 21st century).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizNf6gNuDkm8KNSHd9txVR8gOxmPa-OO8YiTn6xqU3mEZO0S2YTivXhIv352J25ZTI_rRRhRKf9Q3bu3wZ0o-TCL70W2qbgeDCnBtduB6a_qsZsUo3GqTdb3pvskm3xv0XnMgQ2V3RZ7c/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizNf6gNuDkm8KNSHd9txVR8gOxmPa-OO8YiTn6xqU3mEZO0S2YTivXhIv352J25ZTI_rRRhRKf9Q3bu3wZ0o-TCL70W2qbgeDCnBtduB6a_qsZsUo3GqTdb3pvskm3xv0XnMgQ2V3RZ7c/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+5.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But look at what the office boy emerges with from the back room with - what happened to the stapler!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQU2b-mOXr8iAuazyPLgMp7cQ5RqRYtkcY_4ORsR_m4xGeOu_1jJqLLFtlSN720HAI2hWUUhhnDnU1jBJVU1iTtc888yONiSjXWvECl6f5yLRPXs9564lwtZ9sTIVo6g_rj22VO8CpS4/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQU2b-mOXr8iAuazyPLgMp7cQ5RqRYtkcY_4ORsR_m4xGeOu_1jJqLLFtlSN720HAI2hWUUhhnDnU1jBJVU1iTtc888yONiSjXWvECl6f5yLRPXs9564lwtZ9sTIVo6g_rj22VO8CpS4/s1600/Factory+machinery+Japan+scene+6.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But wait, that's not the office stapler, but it is one of the best knives I've ever seen. Yes, it's a Damascus steel bladed beauty with a gorgeuos timber handle to finish it off. So that's what they make with all that amazing machinery - well done. If only I could turn my stapler into a work af art and slice up the roast with it as well. </div>

The Japanese Mortise Chisel (Tategu) - double layer blade laminated with White Paper steel , has a square cross section that tapers towards the end of the blade. Handles are made from Japanese White Oak. In Japan these are used to make or rework the guides of Japanese sliding doors (shoji) and partition walls. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXj7OGCQqvj9OYt2lpvB2qGhZri8r327c5nztJ0g8OD8UYW-kvcdzuCU9NwEiPBPsXGWxJoehnVWGQuvIfu_f9j5fHKJv6CQLBAwLPT5X1H1u0dIUIH848l6LTsGdoa3uZGfol-Xcqdhk/s1600/DSC_0914.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXj7OGCQqvj9OYt2lpvB2qGhZri8r327c5nztJ0g8OD8UYW-kvcdzuCU9NwEiPBPsXGWxJoehnVWGQuvIfu_f9j5fHKJv6CQLBAwLPT5X1H1u0dIUIH848l6LTsGdoa3uZGfol-Xcqdhk/s1600/DSC_0914.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Start by marking the outer dimensions of the mortise using a square and a pencil. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKZKTSk5FaFIl5vvw56ECtsZAN07t7XBZcQ6D_7ymECr23iNEtcftj0d5rKaSpg_4WLwLb9fcdkFpfkKCqf7gwXZAmZ_TtQCIMR5z1ahLxNXhXrho5JLHqRyQn4OjV74xLBl6mDP-qYnE/s1600/DSC_0875.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKZKTSk5FaFIl5vvw56ECtsZAN07t7XBZcQ6D_7ymECr23iNEtcftj0d5rKaSpg_4WLwLb9fcdkFpfkKCqf7gwXZAmZ_TtQCIMR5z1ahLxNXhXrho5JLHqRyQn4OjV74xLBl6mDP-qYnE/s1600/DSC_0875.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next use a mortise guage to mark the width of the mortise. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using a hammer drive your Japanese mortise chisel into the timber starting near the centre of the mortise at an angle of approximately 45 degrees and keeping within the lines marked by the mortise guage. The mortise chisel needs to be driven in line with the timber for the best end result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiB4ezEpR0-mU8PmZVcgYXGxOF-eztTfn20FM9DkileQrJe-ZLNmUlrGv4Oe0D1E4ZzLasNL2853Ly9Yij7c5jGcdvBMWPRwUNynkFdf8eXrts4uTot2DzAfvk2ci2GAMDchAbkZnaNA/s1600/DSC_0883.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiB4ezEpR0-mU8PmZVcgYXGxOF-eztTfn20FM9DkileQrJe-ZLNmUlrGv4Oe0D1E4ZzLasNL2853Ly9Yij7c5jGcdvBMWPRwUNynkFdf8eXrts4uTot2DzAfvk2ci2GAMDchAbkZnaNA/s1600/DSC_0883.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Turn the chisel in the opposite direction to remove your first piece of timber. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWKppOLiuQboQ1NUJfY5wU6FWSQ3r2p-TLWrOi5vNF8ZZVnPXJhPYzVoK1gJUMnd9YcYBZTn3o2vbDY1LVXMaf9feo7JjIG_AJmcI6659h3FdTNh3o2r2QkWmriYrfV5UjAMVDCjVYCIc/s1600/DSC_0887.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWKppOLiuQboQ1NUJfY5wU6FWSQ3r2p-TLWrOi5vNF8ZZVnPXJhPYzVoK1gJUMnd9YcYBZTn3o2vbDY1LVXMaf9feo7JjIG_AJmcI6659h3FdTNh3o2r2QkWmriYrfV5UjAMVDCjVYCIc/s1600/DSC_0887.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The recess is made larger gradually by repeating the first two processes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj-A2mOXCdOxo8XkQL9cxsGp8EhizAwWS6UaQgXwHRUkRot9s940bbmgmNAt6wKy2AEkFCVzKARhlrxFaNn17meFjTmMl2HVgunKKScBEwT8TA-HBhlXcassz9-aw6jMVYGkdp1wLjo-Q/s1600/DSC_0891.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj-A2mOXCdOxo8XkQL9cxsGp8EhizAwWS6UaQgXwHRUkRot9s940bbmgmNAt6wKy2AEkFCVzKARhlrxFaNn17meFjTmMl2HVgunKKScBEwT8TA-HBhlXcassz9-aw6jMVYGkdp1wLjo-Q/s1600/DSC_0891.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When you get to the point where you're almost at the pencil lines use the chisel in a vertical position to remove small shavings until you reach the pencil line. You may need to remove more timber at the bottom of the mortise to allow for the tenon that's going to fit into it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZrkhvxl3UMT61ONHvGph5zeKXKCjGcpoEMFuI8R5OeVFtuV4s7rWT4fGAt6AnT7ORn7aQMDLITAl0SNO-Spc6FX4Be9r_CZPXSLaz5FevNOTRyxolksdBS6piVJcOJAebPiv6AVLDzaw/s1600/DSC_0893.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZrkhvxl3UMT61ONHvGph5zeKXKCjGcpoEMFuI8R5OeVFtuV4s7rWT4fGAt6AnT7ORn7aQMDLITAl0SNO-Spc6FX4Be9r_CZPXSLaz5FevNOTRyxolksdBS6piVJcOJAebPiv6AVLDzaw/s1600/DSC_0893.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the tenon already prepared it's now ready to fit into the mortise.</div>

Tap the tenon into the mortise using a wooden mallet. Now you've got a joint that is strong and suitable for a range of different uses such as tables, chairs and cupboards.</div>

I couldn't believe my eyes as I drove past this short street in The Gap this morning. The Golden Pendas (Xanthostemon chrysanthus) were in flower like I have never seen before. Rainbow Lorrikeets were flying in and out of the trees to get the nectar from the flowers and the flowering of the trees has completely transformed the street into a wonderland.<br />

Along with supplying Japanese Tools we also have a nursery growing plugs (a small plant in an individual cell) in trays. But on the morning of Monday 28th of January 2013 things didn't look quite right in the nursery. The roof blew off then the rain accumultaed in the plastic sheeting that was still partially covering the roof. When the weight of the water got too great for the plastic to hold it any longer, it gave way with hundreds of kilos of water landing on the benches below. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We decided to visit the Zoo in Melbourne on a day when the mercury rose to 41.1deg C. We were among the few that visited on that day. Needless to say we didn't see any Snow Leopards or other cold climate animals - they were inside like we should have been. The Japanese garden within the Zoo grounds had to bear the heat the best it could. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Toowoomba the Garden City boasts one of the best Japanese Gardens in Australia - the Ju Raku En. This week is Toowoomba's Carnival of Flowers - Saturday being one of the best days to visit because there is the parade down the main street with floral floats, street performers, stilt walkers and bands. Starts at 12.00pm on Saturday, 22nd September. Lots of open gardens to visit and of course the Ju Raku En.</div>

Springbrook which though still in south east Queensland is so different to Brisbane it could well be in another country. Sitting 900 metres above sea level the climate is cool, fresh and moist. Up here it is quiet and serene yet not that far away we left behind an eight lane highway with thousands of cars travelling from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and vice versa. The altitude seems to provide the ideal climate for Camellia japonicas, Azaleas and Hydrangeas. The Camellia japonica shrubs were robust, healthy and had flowers covering them with trunks up to 30cm thick. </div>

An imitation of Australia's grand old dame - Edna Everidge - and her sidekick came in to see what we boys had on offer. Unfortinately for us there was a "no sale" when these two roving entertainers left our stand last year at the Queensland Garden Expo in Nambour. On another day we were entertained by Gardening Australia's new host Costa Georgiadis as he ran along the aisles with a trolley, used for moving large pot plants, borrowed from the neighboring stand. Someone was heard to call out "Run Forrest, Run"<br />

We'll be there again on July 6th, 7th and 8th this year so here's hoping the weather stays fine. If you're looking for a great range of hand forged Japanese tools for the garden along with high quality machine made woodsaws, pruning saws and secateurs then get out of the garden for a few hours and come to Nambour. We look forward to seeing you there.</div>

The garden of this very well maintaned cottage caught our eye and as we walked past the lady who owned it was working in it. I commented that she had a beautifully kept garden and a conversation soon ensued. It turned out she is an interior decorator - it really showed. The colour scheme of the house and everything about it looked so inviting. </div>Barry and Judy Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826028337919748518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612272672203457638.post-40757699446712335112012-04-12T15:59:00.000-07:002012-04-12T15:59:31.484-07:00Hanami - the time to view the Sakura flowers.A good friend of ours just sent some photos of the current cherry blossom (Sakura) season taking place in various parts of Japan right now. This is the most popular time for overseas tourists to visit Japan to see this most spectacular show of nature's wonder. For the locals it's a time to get together with friends for picnics and barbecues under the Sakura trees along with festivals that include traditional performing arts.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRH-5xLBimQMn6AxheGIryBReKfSgQAF56-pjSzSRjLZqudGDFYOLUasZHqNXsOL7jgEqrL9xztaIARU98sfHKndnm3ncjuwz5s2EccK0qlotSUwM-lFk7niqFgtApQ1OBlnnr6HW-QCU/s1600/Cherry+blossoms+Japan+A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRH-5xLBimQMn6AxheGIryBReKfSgQAF56-pjSzSRjLZqudGDFYOLUasZHqNXsOL7jgEqrL9xztaIARU98sfHKndnm3ncjuwz5s2EccK0qlotSUwM-lFk7niqFgtApQ1OBlnnr6HW-QCU/s320/Cherry+blossoms+Japan+A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Inside it could be mistaken for a coffee shop, with all sorts of props intended to create some atmosphere for the hapless customers who come in to enjoy the coffee and cake. But then the very friendly owner gets across to you that he built the place himslf when he was much younger - the photographs testify to that when he pulls out an album of photos that show the progresss of the house being built, by a man who resembles the man who is showing me the album.<br />

Musical instruments adorn the beautiful timber walls of this rustic shop. The owner tells me he is a member of a four piece band that get together regularly to play at various venues.</div>

The effort should be put into the pull stroke with only little effort being put into the push stroke. Japanese blades are thinner that western style saws because the blade is under tension on the pull stroke. The blades are also made thicker at the teeth and tapering towards the back of the blade so that as you cut through the branch there is less friction than a western style saw.</span></span><br />

Japanese gardens have some common plants that can be seen time and time again especially in their traditional type <span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">gardens</span>. This courtyard garden has a Rhapis excelsa along with a mix of trees and small shrubs. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The</span> trees are pruned to reveal the outline of the branches and to give a more artistic look to what would otherwise be just another tall tree or shrub. There's never too much repitition in the plantings. A tree such as a Podocarpus, a Cryptomeria or a Pinus is carefully shaped and placed along side of a smaller shrub - an Azalea, Ardisia or a fern set amongst some well chosen rocks.<br />

They shape trees in their own unique way. In the west we have topiaries, clipped formal hedges, informal gardens, cottage gardens, tropical gardens..... but in Japan it's so different.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi75j_x8v27bRJBBZlk04k-2pNtoVaSm-BBAD3Jr3ndNSno7xIE-J9GCgHKrf9HMTorrnYfH278h4HZWdc7Vs6aDJSP7WUnZgaGBCoTK4TGQ0RlB3WXsZKqYYTH0JX3RrbU5w1dm1bpXk/s1600/Trees+shaped+in+Japan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi75j_x8v27bRJBBZlk04k-2pNtoVaSm-BBAD3Jr3ndNSno7xIE-J9GCgHKrf9HMTorrnYfH278h4HZWdc7Vs6aDJSP7WUnZgaGBCoTK4TGQ0RlB3WXsZKqYYTH0JX3RrbU5w1dm1bpXk/s320/Trees+shaped+in+Japan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">An air conditioning unit made to look more attractive by a group of trees clipped into a mass of rounded shapes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFvdJVPne2PfskWVKMu1p1faWX_pBIM3r6wEJe9VprNrJxYtZUy3RaU3VW-J7lvhuXP2iqSlQRcjPvmDM2ceL4_XXXu-GW0DlIn407BSc_F9v7XSrqXAsulKTepj4LDUTacY2Sjqbjzzw/s1600/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+E.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFvdJVPne2PfskWVKMu1p1faWX_pBIM3r6wEJe9VprNrJxYtZUy3RaU3VW-J7lvhuXP2iqSlQRcjPvmDM2ceL4_XXXu-GW0DlIn407BSc_F9v7XSrqXAsulKTepj4LDUTacY2Sjqbjzzw/s320/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+E.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A private home with three clipped trees.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWbMDqbRMvX7XPPsbQTIOfYPCrn7qP9qQiX1bXnTh7KQf2IxuU1Of5N7ye0K_vQzTy3TlzE4OOpYEKcyshQH9jzjExMcKFEGoiia2pugDK8a-j5Q-UYqQzY_4Vk2njICfzcACGJCb-Mpc/s1600/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWbMDqbRMvX7XPPsbQTIOfYPCrn7qP9qQiX1bXnTh7KQf2IxuU1Of5N7ye0K_vQzTy3TlzE4OOpYEKcyshQH9jzjExMcKFEGoiia2pugDK8a-j5Q-UYqQzY_4Vk2njICfzcACGJCb-Mpc/s320/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Another private home with a Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and some shaped Azaleas.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNg6EEU40NgLsDPCAe2aUSoPxFCeaDDNAJ5J-Vb_RbwV0d3c7CL8ZErWfdwlpUy5afr863v3pqXN24NABQEPuvU4GCufEBfpuuLxkOR9Y9Y4YrXEXqxM5k40OvMwqiqH9Kw9_OPmG9pp0/s1600/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+C.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNg6EEU40NgLsDPCAe2aUSoPxFCeaDDNAJ5J-Vb_RbwV0d3c7CL8ZErWfdwlpUy5afr863v3pqXN24NABQEPuvU4GCufEBfpuuLxkOR9Y9Y4YrXEXqxM5k40OvMwqiqH9Kw9_OPmG9pp0/s320/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+C.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Some neatly clipped small shrubs and a Podocarpus tree in a small garden bed greet the visitor to this public park in Tokyo.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJcBPTuu9heufaO3NOl_lKpDzsrc7EbBOz9pkKgL8i526TdkVhoQhWZkgPiR0ia7pFXNipAraAxl1FpOUJOOc4lfbm-nQssEHOrVxXUBciC-b9dmbP2dJUt1mXuwrM3PCkWqUR6poqXAU/s1600/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+F.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJcBPTuu9heufaO3NOl_lKpDzsrc7EbBOz9pkKgL8i526TdkVhoQhWZkgPiR0ia7pFXNipAraAxl1FpOUJOOc4lfbm-nQssEHOrVxXUBciC-b9dmbP2dJUt1mXuwrM3PCkWqUR6poqXAU/s320/Trees+shaped+in+Japan+F.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

The Japanese maple comes in many forms and sizes from shrubs to tall tees. I didn't realise how big they got until I saw them growing in ravines on steep mountain sides. When they change colour in November they can vary from a butter yellow to scarlet red. This photo shows how they can be two toned on the same bush. If you live in a subtropical climate you really appreciate the beauty of the deciduous plants. <br />

Here is a weaver who takes her artistic abilities and produces fabulous fabrics that she turns into scarves, jackets, etc. She uses wool and silk in great patterns to make really artistic pieces. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyYvG4sf281oMHb9ekpwR-QfPII-v8yYFEcz4CmAFQVxxHQA4EUrPsX7szay9IkxOFejONM6wnRRomyosyuxJ8ov0zz0zOgx44UDhV6cXPFw3GAPoPsDjHY6p_Gu9VHDSIoUKSP3Iu0g/s1600/Kamakura+weaver.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyYvG4sf281oMHb9ekpwR-QfPII-v8yYFEcz4CmAFQVxxHQA4EUrPsX7szay9IkxOFejONM6wnRRomyosyuxJ8ov0zz0zOgx44UDhV6cXPFw3GAPoPsDjHY6p_Gu9VHDSIoUKSP3Iu0g/s320/Kamakura+weaver.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is where it all happens. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDnzuncM4Ok-3xEhkz16mjvHuBnAqZUmXJM0uSdRa2_U6QFZXRgyMwQSeQ-GncWvF8YUEZCIT2krTCO6SlGCw2VYT5B3F8xEW1OT8fJBw_k1FiEC89sr48FMlHqbTM_X7nXTDUH_L6M0w/s1600/Kamakura+weaving+machine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDnzuncM4Ok-3xEhkz16mjvHuBnAqZUmXJM0uSdRa2_U6QFZXRgyMwQSeQ-GncWvF8YUEZCIT2krTCO6SlGCw2VYT5B3F8xEW1OT8fJBw_k1FiEC89sr48FMlHqbTM_X7nXTDUH_L6M0w/s320/Kamakura+weaving+machine.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is what it all starts from - the wool...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGO5IGTxRk5oRFsKhwOd4ysBsnhEqJNgzjPQ4w3EdwUn1BjQAn0izvVnTgLTxHMayC1byia0w1XLNnrfL-XZ6dOR7DQyyZS2eQuN0pvPptIlRBupVJzZ6WhIja8SJoy-FTmWcitI09zIg/s1600/kamakura+yarns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGO5IGTxRk5oRFsKhwOd4ysBsnhEqJNgzjPQ4w3EdwUn1BjQAn0izvVnTgLTxHMayC1byia0w1XLNnrfL-XZ6dOR7DQyyZS2eQuN0pvPptIlRBupVJzZ6WhIja8SJoy-FTmWcitI09zIg/s320/kamakura+yarns.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">.......and the silk.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghyphenhyphenhdKq5Lq9BfpcvYBJ_xgXXUWvoK1hjZ-gx_aEI4fM1wUoz8xYOREd7Vw_u5ZkGTXemj3MIE2S9pOwXrKnbtlNvFmFN-3bxZ_uj-EvF1d3B7jf30J2aShtceQQdSdPnGEF-Onxa5DkBo/s1600/kamakura+silks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghyphenhyphenhdKq5Lq9BfpcvYBJ_xgXXUWvoK1hjZ-gx_aEI4fM1wUoz8xYOREd7Vw_u5ZkGTXemj3MIE2S9pOwXrKnbtlNvFmFN-3bxZ_uj-EvF1d3B7jf30J2aShtceQQdSdPnGEF-Onxa5DkBo/s320/kamakura+silks.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>Barry and Judy Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826028337919748518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4612272672203457638.post-3277145655425015062012-03-05T22:35:00.002-08:002012-03-06T15:11:39.608-08:00Green Tea tastes great when it's made properly from good quality tea.Well we've all been served green tea (Camellia sinensis) at some point in Australia and it's no wonder we don't like it. It's nothing like the quality of the tea that is served in restaurants and sushi bars in Japan. Most of what I've drunk in Australia tastes like straw. Good green tea has a mild flavour comboned with a pleasant sweetness. Green tea has all sorts of good things in it - like antioxidants, catechins, etc. The four most common teas in Japan are Sencha, Matcha and Genmaicha ( a green tea combined with roasted brown rice ). Matcha is made by grinding the first of the seasons leaves which have been shaded just before the new shoots have started to grow. Those first shoots are then harvested, processed and then ground into a fine powder. The photo below shows the Matcha being produced in a department store in Kyoto. The tea is sealed into airtight containers to keep the freshness. Because it's an antioxidant is quickly oxidises when in contact with air. It's drunk by mixing about a teaspoon of powder mixed with water at 80 deg C with a bamboo whisk into a fairly thick liquid. Sencha is a high quality tea used in the leaf form while Bancha is a lesser quality tea also sold as tea leaves.<br />

I came out into my garden yesterday morning to find a large branch had fallen from an Eleocarpus grandis (Blue Quandong - a large growing rainforest tree) during the night. It fell right into the middle of a clump of China Gold Bamboo and broke a young Laegerstroemia indica (Crepe Myrtle) that was starting to be trained into shape for a feature in the Japanese garden.The branch was 150 mm in diameter and about 6 metres long. <br />

May, 1995.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The year - 1995 ..... doesn't seem like that long ago really - but I was using a camera that took film!! Yep, no digital cameras back then! I saw this Japanese gardener pruning the hedges outside the Hotel Nikko Narita. When I approached him about getting a photo he was happy to oblige by posing with what I now realise was a pair of Japanese made hedge shears. Didn't really take it in at the time. He also had with him a bamboo rake and a bamboo broom (just in the photo - bottom right hand corner). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiKV3Nlsj_YuWfes5ozMo25PIvMerRLFEAzvyBAQ12_ZnLtOZZV7gv_ujR6LZTygtC1stTnnfK_tC8TFNP79NQPr1o1KdomUoEjLfm2gc2htTvE8vlJVefaMchprSOJloqPDcr7RBY9fE/s1600/Japanese+gardener.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiKV3Nlsj_YuWfes5ozMo25PIvMerRLFEAzvyBAQ12_ZnLtOZZV7gv_ujR6LZTygtC1stTnnfK_tC8TFNP79NQPr1o1KdomUoEjLfm2gc2htTvE8vlJVefaMchprSOJloqPDcr7RBY9fE/s320/Japanese+gardener.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Japanese gardeners always use hand hedge shears to do their hedging work. That's rather funny in a country renowned for it's technological edge with everything mechanical. That's because the finish is so much more refined with no chewed up leaves to go brown after the job's completed.</div>Barry and Judy Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826028337919748518noreply@blogger.com0
